Description:
Distribution in South Africa: WC
Habitat: Permanently wet montane seepages on steep slopes in Sandstone Fynbos.
Conservation: Range-restricted, but the Hawequas are exceptionally steep and inaccessible. It's likely that additional populations remain hidden in these mountains. The most well-known and accessible site is sometimes at risk of trampling by eager visitors, but the other sites are difficult to reach or otherwise not widely known. Invasive pines and Hakea pose a serious threat to this species and these sites should be prioritized for manual removal.
Phenology:
Taxonomy & Variation: No significant variation between populations has been observed.
Drosera regia is restricted to the Hawequa Mountains near Bainskloof Pass.
D. regia dies back during the cold winter and emerges as the weather warms
Known from just a dozen or so sites near Bainskloof Pass, there are probably many more that are inaccessible in the steep Hawequa range.
When not flowering, D. regia can be difficult to spot amongst the dense grasses and restios
