Taxonomy & Variation: Two distinct variations occur. The type form is restricted to the Hottentots-Holland Mtns and Groenlandberg. A larger form with longer lamina and petioles occurs in the Kogelberg and Kleinrivier Mountains, including Caledon Swartberg. Genetic analysis could reveal whether or not these variations have taxonomic significance.
Drosera esterhuyseniae in South Africa
Plants from the Kleinrivier Mtns have longer petioles and lamina than plants from the Hottentots-Holland Mtns and Groenlandberg.
Individuals from Caledon Mountain (Caledon Swartberg) are particularly robust.
More work is needed to determine if the variation between populations of D. esterhuyseniae is taxonomically relevant
